A Discord server can have a LOT of channels and messages! These basic features will help you keep it manageable.

Mute mute mute!

You can mute servers, categories, and channels. Changing “mute” settings applies everywhere you access Discord (mobile, desktop app, or browser). Do this aggressively, especially on noisy channels you don’t care about!

How:

  1. Right-click (desktop) or long-press (mobile) the thing you want to mute.
  2. Select “Mute Channel/Category/Server.”
  3. Select how long you want to mute it for.

Hide channels

You can hide muted channels.

How: Click (or tap on mobile) the name of the server above the channels list and turn on “Hide Muted Channels.” This setting will apply everywhere you access Discord (mobile, desktop app, or browser).

More How: In “Community Servers” only, you can show and hide channels regardless of whether they’re muted.

  1. Above the list of channels, click the “Browse Channels” button.
  2. Unfollow categories and uncheck channelsl to hide them.
  3. To see all the channels again, click or tap the server name above the list of channels and select “Show All Channels.”

Advanced Notification Settings

See New Server Notification Settings Experiment. This feature may not be available to you.

If you only want to opt IN to receiving notifications (instead of opting OUT via muting), use Notification Settings. These settings will apply everywhere you access Discord (mobile, desktop app, or browser).

How:

  1. Right-click or long-press the server or category you want to suppress.
  2. Select “Notification Settings” and select the one you want: “Only @mentions” or “Nothing.”
  3. Inside that server or category, right click or long-press the server or category you do not want to suppress.
  4. Select Notification Settings and select “All Messages.”

Happy chatting!
